Monkeys

Monkeys are very common in Belize. Since many areas surrounding Belizean villages or cities are still untamed bush, seeing and interacting with monkeys is not uncommon. Howlermonkeys especially can be “teased” by imitating the sound males make to claim their territory. More than once males have come close to us, howling as loud as they could wondering who those strange monkeys at the bottom of the trees were.

In villages such as Yalbach (Belize, Cayo district) children report of monkeys becoming aggressive toward humans. They like to eat out of the garbage, which incites the villagers to drive them away by hurling stones at them. As a result of this daily interactions some of these animals loose their shyness. Since especially the howlermonkeys are rather big in size, this can become quite a problem. As far as we could ascertain, nobody has been hurt by these usually rather docile creatures so far.
